The History of 1152 Mainland Street

I find Vancouver's heritage incredibly fascinating, which is why I decided to post a short blog post about the building I work from.

The office of Engel & Völkers Vancouver is located in Yaletown at 1152 Mainland Street. The building was originally a factory and warehouse designed by architect Thomas Hooper and built by McDonald & Wilson in 1912.

In the early days, the Otis-Fensom Elevator Company operated out of 1152 Mainland until the early 1940s. At this time Otis-Fensom manufactured electric, steam and hydraulic elevators at 1152 Mainland.

If you like seeing old photos of Vancouver as much as I do, I highly suggest joining the Facebook group “Nostalgic/Sentimental Vancouver (Pictures).”

The historical photo was taken June 28, 1937, by Dominion Photo Co. (Vancouver Public Library archive #24127).
